I am usually the type of person that goes with the flow, after, but after graduation I found myself feeling really stuck, and unsure of how my flow was moving. I'm sure I'm not speaking for myself when I say this feeling sucks. I didn't even realize there was a name to this feeling.

What is an Existential Crisis?

Basically, an existential crisis occurs when someone is going through a phase of their life where they may be questioning their own existence, their life's purpose, and decisions. It's normal for us to experience anxiety and stress at some point in our lives, a lot of times these emotions are short-term. but when these feelings linger they can contribute to an existential crisis...

These feelings can be brought on by:

  • Breakups

  • guilt about something

  • losing a loved one

  • feeling socially unfulfilled

  • dissatisfaction with self

  • Other major life changes

For me, it was a couple of these points combined.

Moving on

Most existential crises come and go in time, here's a few tips to help you get past this gloomy phase:

  1. Take the time to connect with yourself. Through practices like meditation and mindfulness, we can remind ourselves that our lives have a purpose.

  2. Invest in hobbies. Taking the time to do the things you enjoy can help spark passion and help you to regain a sense of purpose.

  3. Talk about it. Don't be afraid to share your feeling with trusted people in your life, they may be able to offer another perspective.
